Childproofing

Today they moved the electrical outlets and switches out of the reach of children and most adults.

Doors

We got our first two doors today. The front door does not have any windows in it. We don't want the lower door to be mistaken for the front door by our friends.
The door in the back has windows. This is the view I wanted to show yesterday. It shows the vertical boards that were installed. They may start on our septic system next week.

New faucet

They put on more of the vertical strips that make the bottom look complete. The view that showed more of the work was out of focus. You can see the faucet on the back of our house.
We now have a water faucet on the front of the house. I think it was installed today. I noticed it today. It is between the front door and the small garage door.

Very ventilating

They installed more vents today. With all the vents that we will have, we won't have to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning in our garages.
I am told we are waiting for a permit for our new septic system. Once they install the new septic system, they can decommission our old septic tank which is next to the back porch. Once the old septic tank is decommissioned, they can build our back porch. Once our back porch is built, they can remove our temporary front steps and install our front porch.

Windows installed

They installed the windows today. You can see all the windows in the lower section from this angle. Some of you may not know the layout of the house. The area to the left is the family room. We use to call our family room a Rec Room when I was growing up. I'm not sure if it was a Rec Room (short for Recreation Room) or a Wreck Room (named after the way we left it). The area in the middle is the dining area. The small window is in the "blue" bathroom. The room to the far right is the spare bedroom. The two side-by-side windows under the spare bedroom are in the large garage (the small garage doesn't have any windows).
I don't think I catch everything they do every day. Some days I will notice something and wonder when they did it.

Work Continues

They continued putting on the strips of painted wood that decorate the lower half of the house.
They also added some vent holes from the garage area in the front of the house to the walk space (a crawl space you can walk through) in the back of the house. We have to let the flood go through the house. If you look hard you can see the vapor barrier on the ground in the walk space.
I enjoyed my birthday today.

Windows

They delivered the windows today. They are in the small garage.
They also put up the framing and decorative pieces around the garage doors. You can see the rigging they used to cut pieces to length. They used the large garage to get out of the rain. They also used the window opening.
This is the small garage. The windows are out of sight along the wall to the right.
They also put decorative pieces on the side of the house.

More belly band

They added more of the belly band today. The part that is missing in the front is where the front porch will be.
They put pressure treated lumber where the back porch will go. They added the belly band to the rest of the house except for the gap where the front porch will be.

Starting on the belly band

They started putting up the belly band today. They also added decorative pieces to the lower section.
This is the south side of the house. You can see the decorative pieces that were installed on the lower section. You can also see the vents to let the flood in.

Flashing

We had more material delivered today. This is the flashing for the "Belly Band". We also had more lumber left in the area between the garages.

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Insulation and lumber

They continued to fill in the gaps in the insulation today.
They also delivered some more lumber. This garage is big enough for the lumber and a car.

Painting and insulation

We now have a reason for two garages again. The car that was stolen was recovered and repaired. We got it back today. Both cars are the same size.
They painted the boards today. This is looking down on our back yard from the dining area. The brown boards are for the "belly band".
These are some more boards they painted. The brown ones are trim for the windows and doors. The lighter colored boards go the bottom part of the house.
They also started filling in the insulation in the garage ceiling.

Even more vents

They added even more vents to our house. They also removed a dirt pile from the front of our house.

Monday, May 10, 2010

More vents and lumber

They installed more vents in our wall so the flood can get in. The new vents are not painted yet. They also delivered more lumber today.

Painting and grading

They painted the lower part of the house today. There will be a brown "belly band" between the top and the bottom. The sky is a funny color today.
This is the back view of the house. They also graded the back yard today to get rid of the standing water we were getting in the back yard.

Fixing a hole

I remember a line of a song from my youth that goes: I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in. We are required to have holes (vents) for the flood to get in. Today they starting putting in the vents for the flood to get in. So far we have at least eight vents. The vents have a wire mesh to keep the critters out and they are trimmed to look nice.
If you look closely you can see our car in the garage to the right. Our contractor said we could park in the garage on Monday, but we forgot until today.
The police found our other car today. We will go tomorrow to see how badly it was damaged.
The cats enjoy the new garage and "walk" space. They like running around out of the rain. I saw one cat climb an eight foot post in the garage.
They moved the port-a-potty off the grass today. They moved it closer to the street.

The grass is always greener

In our front yard, the grass was always greener under the port-a-potty. That is because they tore up the rest of out front yard.
Last night we had a windstorm. It blew over the port-a-potty. The nice thing was we didn't feel the wind in the house.
Today the workers put the port-a-potty back up and took off the forms they had for the concrete. The painter came over to talk about what color we want to paint the siding on the lower part of the house.
We are still down to one car. We could get a rental, but I am gun shy about leaving a car at a park-and-ride all day while I go to work.
